Characters
White Cloud
White Cloud is a Cowichan Shaman of indeterminate age – but his countenance indicates that he is far from being a youngster. He is dressed in a mix of biker leather, shaman garb and frill, cowboy boots, and incongruously, an Iron Maiden T-shirt. He is throwing bones – what appear to be an amalgam of teeth and fangs. He stares intently at the results of each roll. On the third roll, he looks suddenly surprised, he starts chuckling to himself ominously. I have never seen this before… Standing up, he shuffles outside his tent and stares east at the beckoning dawn sky. The sun is breaking through. Sunlight shimmers across the Salish Sea. We create the world with our words. A Raven! *THE RAVEN STOLE THE SUN is a native legend. Different variations of the story exist, but all of them have one common thread, that a raven returns the light back to the people. The Cowichan tribes of the pacific coast believed that a seagull had taken the sun and hidden it, until a raven discovered his hiding place. In their version of the tale, the Raven outsmarts the seagull so that he can steal the sun and return it to his people.
